A Dream....

Most big dreams begin with inspiration.

Read this story..:
"The inspiration for Morgan’s Wonderland originated in 2006 when philanthropist Gordon Hartman observed a poignant occurrence involving his daughter Morgan, a child with special needs, and a group of other children. All were on vacation splashing in a hotel swimming pool. Morgan appeared as if she wanted to take part in the fun, and the others exhibited similar interest in interacting with Morgan. Unfortunately, the connection never materialized.

Hartman thought then and there how wonderful it would be to create a special place for special friends. It would be an environment for inclusion and understanding. It would be an oasis for those needing a safe place to relax and enjoy the outdoors. Hartman quickly learned that millions of children and adults who suffer from cognitive and physical challenges generally do not have access to facilities specifically established to assist them in enjoying outdoor activities.

Thus, Morgan’s Wonderland began with a desire to re-image the possibilities of what an inclusive park could be, if everyone were free to soar beyond their perceived limitations. This colorful and ultra-accessible 25-acre park will serve as a haven not only for those with special needs but also for their families, caregivers and invited friends.

To take Morgan’s Wonderland from dream to reality, the Gordon Hartman Family Foundation in 2007 created non-profit Sports Outdoor And Recreation (SOAR) to raise funds for the park and to provide for professional management. Then came the decision to develop one-of-a-kind Morgan’s Wonderland on the former site of the Longhorn Quarry in Northeast San Antonio, and construction began in spring 2009. To encourage inclusive recreation where individuals of all abilities can play side by side, the park became part of a 106-acre sports center that includes the South Texas Area Regional (STAR) Soccer Complex, featuring 14 fully lit, tournament-quality soccer fields. Also located nearby is the North East Independent School District’s 11,000-seat Heroes Stadium as well as venues for baseball and track and field.

Funding for Morgan’s Wonderland began with an initial gift of $1 million from Gordon and Maggie Hartman in love and admiration for Morgan. Financial commitments from the City of San Antonio, the State of Texas, charitable foundations, corporations and individuals have made it possible for park construction to proceed. Additional gifts and grants as well as proceeds from the STAR Soccer Complex will enable Morgan’s Wonderland to admit special-needs individuals free and others at a nominal charge.

Morgan’s Wonderland is the first park of its kind in the world specifically designed for the recreation and enjoyment of individuals with special needs. SOAR envisions Morgan’s Wonderland serving as a model for additional ultra-accessible family fun parks across the nation. In so doing, San Antonio will become known as a national leader in the promotion of family-oriented activity and fun for those of all ages with special needs.

SOAR, Morgan’s Wonderland and STAR offer deepest gratitude to all those now and in the future that care enough to make a difference and change lives, one special friend at a time.

Can you even believe this?!?! There is a place...a park..a vacation spot...for Special Needs families!

Ellen wrote about this as well...and I totally get her point. She feels that places like Disney should become more accommodating for Special Needs.

Unfortunately, it's not actually the park that's not accommodating. I worked for Disney for quite some time. I know how they try very hard to meet the needs of every individual guest (you have to do your part to ask for that help, but it's there).

The problem lies with society as a whole. People are downright rude. They don't care if you have a kid in a wheelchair. They glare...they whisper "that kid looks normal. They're using the chair to get to the front of the line faster."

Society doesn't live with feeding tubes, medications, sensory impairment, or disability. They don't know how to tolerate something that's not "normal" and the result is the stare, the look away, or the ignorance.

Sad, isn't it?

When we went to Disney with Jack, it was sort of nightmare-ish. Things that typical kids loved, he hated. It was too loud, too dark, to stimulating, too many people...except for EPCOT. He loved EPCOT...but only the countries. You know, the quiet places. I love Disney, but it is hard to find a quiet spot to calm a kid with a major meltdown.

So, why is Morgan's Wonderland so exciting to me?

Sure, there are accommodations made for Special Kids...it's free to get in for them, it's inexpensive for anyone else, they limit the number of guests they allow per day...

BUT, and this BUT is the BIGGIE...

Our kids will be welcomed and accepted---by EVERY SINGLE PERSON IN THE PARK! There will be other kids with disabilities...other parents who totally understand what it means to have the "emergency bribe" ready at any moment. Parents, who upon seeing you drop everything in your arms because your kid is choking, would pitch in to help---not stare at you.

My heart couldn't be more full of joy for Morgan, her parents, San Antonio, and the entire country! This is truly revolutionary.

Bravo!

We are huge Disney fans, but a years worth of experiences has left me really frustrated. The patrons are so RUDE sometimes. Kudos to Morgan's Wonderland for getting it right!

Bravo! We had a similar experience with Disneyland....in fact I said I would not return again! We let them know ahead of time what our son's situation was, we went to customer service etc. And were so disappointed at just about all but a couple things. The rider workers at Pirates of the Caribbean were great and on the Pirate Island Captain Jack Sparrow was wonderful with Ethan as well....they were the only ones in the WHOLE park that treated my son like a person and not an illness. We are going to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter and Disney World through Make-A-Wish (Ethan's Wish) this summer, and I *HOPE* it is everything Ethan dreams it will be!

Wow..how true. People whisper and stare and can be so mean. I work so hard to educate people and I still encounter that one or two who think autism is made up and that we want free stuff. I would trade every little tidbit we get (therapy?) to have the life these people take for granted. I wish there was a way to change people, but alas...I've not found it yet. Yay for Morgan's Wonderland!

Morgan's Wonderland sounds amazing. I work in a College that caters for 16-19 year olds and has a small class of Students with disabilities. It really bothers me that people are so ignorant to them and their needs on a day to day basis and we also have the whispering that goes with 'they don't look disabled'....aaarrrggghh!!!!

That sounds so amazing (though my first thought was "why Texas where there are so many bugs that scare me?"--seriously, I have got to get over the cricket thing). I love that it is inclusive with a certain group in mind. Sort of like how everyone can eat vegetarian, but vegetarians can't eat a meat meal. This is making a welcome table where everyone can sit down together and play.

That's incredible! What a wonderful idea. Its just not fair, the way people judge anyone who is different. Bravo to the people who made the park happen. Its about time.
